The main jail is located at 950 California Avenue, Spartanburg, South Carolina. Construction was initiated in 1992, and it was occupied in July of 1994. At the time that it was opened, it was rated with a capacity of 436 inmates (the majority of whom are in pretrial status.) The jail was constructed in response to overcrowding at the jail’s other two facilities, now known as Annex I and Annex II. On the day it was opened in July 1994, 299 inmates were moved from the jail’s existing buildings. Within one month, August 1994, the jail transferred inmates back into the two older buildings due to the inmate population exceeding 400. The jail is currently operating all three buildings at varying population levels depending on the number of individuals being detained at any given time. |
