This evening a Spartanburg County Deputy Sheriff assigned as a Detention Officer was assaulted by a Inmate. The Inmate, Caroline Foxwell-Holmes, had been transported to the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for treatment of a medical condition by the Detention Officer. While at the hospital the Inmate assaulted the Detention Officer inflicting injuries upon the officer that has required the officer to receive medical treatment. The officer was able to use her self defense training to get inmate Foxwell-Holmes off of her and used CAPSTUN spray to further incapacitate her. This allowed hospital security to intervene and take inmate Foxwell-Holmes into custody. Ms. Foxwell-Jones was treated for exposure to the CAPSTUN spray by medical personnel. CAPSTUN is a brand of what is commonly referred to as pepper spray. The injuries received by the officer are not life threatening. The inmate was taken into custody and returned to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.
An investigation of this incident will be conducted to determine how the inmate was able to get into a position to be able to assault the detention officer. The patients and staff of the hospital were not threatened at any time during this incident. The name of the Deputy that was assaulted is not being released at this time pending notification of family.
