Last night at approx. 10:20 PM, deputies responded to a disturbance at 16 Williams St., Spartanburg, SC, 29301. Upon arrival, they found a male victim who had been stabbed numerous times. There were also 2 witnesses on the scene, who witnessed the incident and identified both the victim and the suspect. EMS also responded to the incident location and transported the victim to the hospital where he later passed away. The suspect also showed up at the hospital with a laceration to his hand. A search of the suspect resulted in the discovery of a bloody knife on his person. Once he was treated for his hand injury, he was transported to the office for an interview, but he was uncooperative. He was transported to the detention facility, and a violent crimes investigator presented the facts of this incident to a magistrate, who approved warrants on the suspect for Murder and Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Violent Crime. The suspect is Matthew Ryan Shope, W/M, N. Sweetwater Hills Dr., Moore, SC, 29369. His booking photo, and the incident report are attached above. A motive for the incident remains under investigation.
